CASSIE DIDN’T FEEL much better in the morning. She found a seat by herself on the bus and spent the ride drafting a note to Ms. Buckley, the school counselor. She wrote down everything that had happened. Fresh tears came to her eyes as she rewrote it, and her chin trembled with fury and indignation. No one had ever spoken that way to her before.

And truthfully, she regretted what she’d said, too. She’d been so angry, lashing out verbally and saying things she’d never say in person. Her shame made her feel black and dirty inside.

She finished her note before the bus arrived. She paused by Ms. Buckley’s office and found the little mailbox for students to drop notes in. She shoved it inside and crossed her fingers. Let Ms. Buckley find it soon, she prayed.

She spent the rest of the day waiting. Her feelings were near the surface, and anytime anyone spoke to her, she found herself close to tears again. She kept glancing toward the door, hoping Ms. Buckley or one of her student helpers would appear.

At recess she told Danelle she wasn’t feeling well. She didn’t want to swing today. Instead she sat on the sidewalk and played with the grass, tearing up little pieces and searching for four leaf clovers.

Two shoes appeared next to her, and then Riley plunked down on the sidewalk. “Are you okay?” she asked.

Cassie nodded. She rested her chin on her knees and didn’t meet Riley’s eyes.

“Trisha’s mean,” Riley continued. “She always has been. I don’t know why. Maybe she just doesn’t know what to do around kids.”

“Does she have any?” Cassie asked.

“A little boy. He’s like three or something.”

“She shouldn’t be a leader, then.”

Riley shrugged. “No one else volunteered. My mom couldn’t do it by herself.”

Cassie supposed that was true, but she still didn’t like it. “I’m going to switch groups.”

“Really?” Riley fell silent. They both picked at the grass for a bit, adding the pieces they picked to a growing pile on the sidewalk. “Well, that’s too bad.”

Ms. Dawson blew her whistle. Students stopped their play and began to gather in from the corners of the yard.

“You should come over and spend the night,” Riley said.

The invitation caught her off guard. She had a best friend, but so far Danelle hadn’t invited her over. She’d expected that to be her first invite. But she quickly brushed it off. “That would be fun.”

“Maybe this Friday?” Riley suggested.

“Okay,” Cassie said. She felt a little bit of light crack through the blackness in her soul, breaking off a chunk of the dark. “I’ll ask my mom.”
